Rockville Wegmans construction update (Video+Photos)

Here is the latest update from the construction site of the future Rockville Wegmans store and Phase 1 of the Twinbrook Quarter development at the corner of Rockville Pike and Halpine Road. Remember these photos when you are driving among the concrete pillars in the underground parking garage below the store in a few years, because that's where the action is at the moment here. 

It's interesting to see in the video below the methods used to reduce dust and debris from spilling out beyond the construction site, when the dump trucks haul away soil and rocks. First the truck drives onto rollers to dislodge debris from the tires, and then a tarp is placed over the bed. The completed Wegmans will be 80,000 square feet in size, with apartments and office space above it.

There are now three tower cranes erected at the future site of the Twinbrook Quarter development, Phase 1 of which includes anchor retail tenant Wegmans. The cranes are highly visible as you come down the southbound lanes of Rockville Pike from the Edmonston Drive intersection. Developer B.F. Saul says concrete pours have begun for the foundation of the building that will have Wegmans on the ground floor, starting with the underground parking garage. That is a complex job and will take some time to complete, the company says.

The next phase of construction at the future Wegmans/Twinbrook Quarter construction site is now set to begin. A tower crane has been erected at the B.F. Saul development project at the corner of Rockville Pike and Halpine Road, across from Congressional Plaza. Excavation and pile driving have already been performed to ready the site for construction of the eagerly-anticipated grocery store, as well as the residential and office space that will be above it.

Sheeting, shoring and excavation are the primary steps taken at the future site of Wegmans and the Twinbrook Quarter development at Rockville Pike and Halpine Road since my last update. Contractors are now grading the excavated area for construction of the underground parking garage. The shuttered Fuddruckers restaurant remains a prominent sight on the horizon beyond the excavation for the B.F. Saul project.

The retail buildings on the site of the future Rockville Wegmans grocery store have been leveled at the corner of Rockville Pike and Halpine Road. You can see the vacant Fuddruckers restaurant all the way from that corner now, which wasn't possible before. The parking lot that surrounded the stores is still intact. Wegmans will be the anchor retail tenant of B.F. Saul's Twinbrook Corner development here.
