DEL FRISCO'S GRILLE ROCKVILLE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE (PHOTOS)

Del Frisco's Grille Rockville is the first business expected to open at Federal Realty's new Pike & Rose development. Yesterday, the nearly-finished restaurant was still very much a construction zone, as many final touches were being added by a sizable crew of workers. All of the upscale finishes and furnishings are in place, and chefs were hard at work in the expansive kitchen as they gear up to execute the recipes of Executive Chef Cody Lynch.

Lynch, a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, has previously served as both a sous chef and executive chef at McCormick & Schmick's here in the DC area. That should serve him well, as seafood is one of the things Del Frisco's is known for. He and General Manager Rahsaan Stone were both on-hand and busy yesterday.

Wraparound bar
You'll be able to see the chefs at work yourself from most vantage points in the restaurant, as it features an open kitchen design. The sizable bar area - with wraparound bar - should be a great happy hour destination at Pike & Rose, but there is also a more secluded, glassed-in wine room with a table for 10. Speaking of tables, there is a mix of conventional tables, as well as a some larger, communal ones. These can also be used to accommodate parties of 10+, but Stone said the restaurant wants to give top priority to the larger number of small parties, so that walk-ins won't have to wait for a table. He said the flexibility will help make the restaurant a destination for suburban families.

It seems that most hot, new restaurants need an inviting outdoor seating area. Dining al fresco at Del Frisco will be made easier through a variety of seasons with misting and warming equipment to keep temperatures comfortable for patio patrons. Stone pointed out that zinc panels on the exterior facade are designed to develop a patina over time, to fit with other throwback architecture details around the Pike & Rose development.

Indoors, you'll find the space dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows, wood beams, red and gold furniture and a variety of lighting fixtures, including rose chandeliers.

The American comfort cuisine menu will feature dishes such as prime New York Strip, and sole francese with lump crab and chive-lemon butter. Small plates fans can enjoy jumbo lump crabcake sliders, cheesesteak egg rolls, and ahi tacos stuffed with tuna tartare and avocado, to name a few.

When it opens (the opening date has not yet been made official, although a blurb on the restaurant website says September 25 - stay tuned for official word), Del Frisco's Grille Rockville's hours will be Monday through Saturday for lunch, from 11:30 AM until 4:00 PM. Dinner will be served Sunday through Thursday from 4 PM until 10 PM, and Friday through Saturday from 4 PM until 11 PM.  Will there be Sunday brunch? Yes! Brunch will be served from 11 AM until 4 PM Sundays. It just occurred to me that I need to find out if there will be extended hours for the bar after the kitchen closes at night, as is the case at some restaurants around town.

THE RESURGENCE OF BIG SUVS IN AMERICA - AND MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Giant SUVs were thought to have been driven into extinction by the double whammy of the Great Recession and inflated gas prices. Media reports suggest that Americans are desperate to downsize their vehicles and housing. But just as the claim that "the suburbs are dead" proved premature, Summer 2014 auto sales numbers indicate Americans' desire for bigger and better trucks is only growing.

A USA Today article from August 25, 2014 (which appeared only in print, not online), says there is "oversized demand" for the next generation of outsized SUVs. The article cited Autodata figures which showed sales of the redesigned 2015 Cadillac Escalade shot up in July 2014, with twice as many of the yacht-like luxury truck being sold as had been moved last July. Ford Expedition sales were up 59.3%, and GM's Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon sales both notched 50% increases.

In comparison, overall new car sales increased only 9.1%.

Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell told USA Today's James R. Healey that "we just closed the order bank" for the 2015 Escalade, "and we have three times as many orders as we can supply."

The hot truck is a hot seller here in Montgomery County, as well. Patrick Coleman of Jim Coleman Cadillac in Bethesda says, "since the redesign, the new Escalade has had a tremendous amount of attention in our showroom. In fact, we have been unable to keep a supply in stock because the demand has been so high."

Workers at the Arlington, Texas plant where the Escalade is manufactured are now working 3 shifts just to keep up with demand, according to USA Today. Still, many of the Escalades being manufactured are arriving pre-sold at dealerships across the country, with prospective owners placing orders, and waiting for delivery of the SUVs. That can been the case at Jim Coleman as well, where many 2015 Escalades "are actually presold prior to their arrival at the dealership," Patrick Coleman noted.

With demand steady and Cadillac working to meet it, Coleman says the Bethesda dealership expects "sales to continue to be strong into the fall as we get more inventory."

Perhaps most interesting, is the study detailing how Americans use their large SUVs. Are they parking the low-gas-mileage vehicles and boarding public transit? Not according to an analysis by TrueCar.com cited by USA Today.

The top daily uses for large SUVs are shopping/errands (32.2%), commuting (25.3%) and "taking kids to school" (15.2%). Cadillac knows its upscale suburban buyer well, touting the Escalade as "the 420-hp gated community." "Once you've reached the top," Escalade's website argues, "there's only one direction to go - over." Sales figures suggest Americans nationwide - and locally - are doing just that.

Don't panic, Krispy Kreme fans. Your drive-thru donuts are not in danger. A large Five Guys franchisee, Monument Restaurants, has purchased the Rockville Krispy Kreme, located in the Fallsgrove shopping center off of Shady Grove Road.

The move, reported by the Triad Business Journal, is actually part of a positive donut development. Monument is holding onto the Rockville store, but also plans to open 20 new stores in the DC Metro area. Hopefully all with drive-thrus!

Krispy Kreme currently is offering a limited-edition Pumpkin Spice donut, and Pumpkin Spice latte for the Halloween season.
