Majority of Maryland residents have considered leaving the state, poll finds

The University of Maryland Baltimore County continues to drop new results from its recent poll of Maryland residents, and the hits just keep on coming for the state's struggling and inept elected officials. Yesterday's release showed that a majority of the residents polled have considered moving out of Maryland to another state within the past year. A full 53% said, yes, they have considered leaving Maryland in the next few years.

Montgomery County has seen a flight of the rich to lower-tax jurisdictions in the region this century, and those expats have taken millions of dollars in tax revenue with them. There were no longer enough high-end shoppers to sustain the stretch of Wisconsin Avenue in Friendship Heights that was once touted as "Montgomery County's Rodeo Drive," leaving behind rows of empty storefronts. Maryland experienced a similar exodus after passing its "Millionaires' Tax" in 2012, only to find that 1000 millionaires had fled the state just two years later.

54% who were interviewed by UMBC said Maryland is a "poor or fair" place to start a business. That's not surprising, given that 67% of respondents also agreed that the state's economy is moribund

Maryland not only has gained a terrible reputation as an anti-business state internationally, but is increasingly seen by aging residents as a terrible place to retire, as well. The largest group of respondents, 37%, said Maryland is a "poor" state to retire in. 64% concluded that Maryland is a "poor or fair" retirement destination. Again, not very surprising, as increasing numbers of retirees leave Maryland behind for Delaware or Florida.

Almost half of those polled said Maryland is a "poor or fair" state to seek a K-12 education in. That's quite a drop from two decades ago, when Maryland's schools were seen as among the best in the nation. Only 11% believe Maryland is an "excellent" place to find a job. Well, you can't blame them: most of the jobs that give Montgomery County and Maryland low unemployment rates are actually located in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.

  1. No comments? Really? I bet that you're in agreement that leaving the State seems to be the better option these days. With a total one party rule that constantly gerrymanders election areas to keep themselves in power, there is virtually no chance of anything constructive happening here. Over spend by 2 billion dollars or more? No problem we "won't raise taxes" we simply increase your property assessment by 20%. Oh and raise "administrative fees" too. Register your car - you need a loan from the bank.

    1. This is exactly why we are considering selling everything we own in Maryland and moving to a place more friendly to people building a future.

    2. Maryland has become the California of the East coast. The Democrats majority are all about taxation.

    3. They are ready to gerrymander again for 2026. I want that to stop!

  4. no more state taxes or everyone will be gone. And Wes Moore wants a 40 percent property tax increase. Last year it was 25 percent, time to pack up and leave.

  5. I grew up in Maryland and now live in Texas though love Maryland and visit family and friends for extended stays. Some are challenged by health issues. I point this out in this regard - I think Maryland is something like last in the U.S. in emergency room wait times. With an aging populace in the entire country, access to healthcare is very important. People used to poke fun at Texas, now it's a shining star. Even new large suburban and urban hospital and medical complexes in Texas, some $1Bil+ investments, are better than Johns Hopkins or any suburban hospital in Maryland. Johns Hopkins of course is still a top research institution and medical school. Maryland has lost its quality of life luster in so many ways.

  7. Average Maryland retiree is receiving $15,000 per year to live on.
Personally, my Washington County, Maryland property taxes has risen over $600 in just 6 years. That’s an average of about $370 a week to live on. This is not doable with inflation costing everyone so much more to own their modest homes, electricity, insurances, maintain a vehicle, buy life saving medications, buying food, paying for home repairs, and so on and so on. It would be wonderful to have a caring Governor take a look at his retirees and reinstate their prescription drug benefit and lower seniors’ property taxes. Maryland Retirees
need help now. I am one of 55,000 retirees who needs help now.

    2. 9:37: Hogan had almost zero power. He was totally dominated by the Democrat-controlled legislature, who have to own the outcome of their actions and inactions during the Hogan years.

  13. the current folks in office in both the state and Montgomery Co have taxed us to death and lowered services and the quality of schools. Now they are talking about more tax benefits for pot businesses. This push on drug availability has only made everything worse. Are the elected also high that they make such stupid decisions? Very disappointing. I continue to look seriously at moving. The state will be more like Calif in its decisions and the subsequent exodus of many.

  14. Yes I’m leaving Maryland . The governor was in office year and half and now Maryland is in financial trouble. The last year eight years was great . Every time a democrat is in office they always have bad policy to over spending. We Marylanders had to pay for their bad policy . You can have this state . I’m so done with this state . Florida looks like a good state to move to . At least there governor cares about their people.

  15. We are leaving. The spending of Dems is not sustainable and over taxing residents is a doomed policy. And what do we get for it? Nothing. They are lining their pockets and the pockets of their friends.

  16. If there was a place that I could move to from this state? It would be West Virginia

  17. When people re-elect time and again the same tax and spend politicians, they can't expect anything different and can't complain. Those of us who know better, vote against them and roll our eyes at the lack of wisdom from those without.

  19. Wake up. The Administration is using sunshine (the best disinfectant) and strangling the Democrats and their special interest programs. Maryland should be so very much better than it is. Looking forward to the useless politicians in the County not drawing a paycheck soon once the clawback hits. Someone needs to alert DOGE to cut the funding funnel here and see if things improve.

  20. We just moved from Maryland to Delaware in August. Our property taxes for the same value house went from almost $6,000 to $1,300. My health insurance and car insurance went down as well. There is no sales tax in Delaware so our purchasing power increased. Both states are run by Democrats. Crime in Baltimore county is out of control. Juveniles are not facing consequences for their actions. They are just being released into their parents care. I feel so much safer now as well. My husband lived in Maryland his entire life and never thought he would move. I moved to Baltimore almost 30 years ago and loved it! It is so sad to see the city become so dangerous. I am reading now how Baltimore county will be increasing their taxes and more consumer taxes being added. Maryland is such a beautiful state and it is sad to see how politicians are ruining it.
