Devastating news from Rockville Pike: Roy Rogers has permanently closed at 718 Rockville Pike in Rockville. It seemed like Roy Rogers had just returned to Montgomery County, and now it is retreating before even opening a location in every town in MoCo. There's no question the lack of a drive-thru was a very poorly thought out plan, when drive-thrus account for over 70% of sales at fast food restaurants, and it certainly significantly reduced the number of times I did business there. But if they can't make it on Rockville Pike, it raises serious questions about the brand's future. Customers are being redirected to the Lost Knife Road location, one of the highest-crime streets in the County, and definitely not "nearby."

What a shame, why does Roy Roger's always close stores? Obviously like the article says, not having a drive through was a problem.
ReplyDeleteLack of a drive-thru is only a problem for the obese and lame.
Delete12:53: It's actually a problem for the business owner regardless of their physical condition. Over 70% of QSR sales in America are via the drive-thru. Not having one is a lot of lost business.
Delete“ why does Roy Roger's always close stores?” I don’t understand what you mean by this. The last time Roy’s closed in MoCo was in 1998, when Hardee’s sold the restaurants they owned to McDonald’s
DeleteWhen I was growing up in Gaithersburg there was a Roy Roger's at corner of Odendhal and Frederick Ave,it closed and became McDonald's, then I believe there was a Roy's open at Odendhal and Contour which became Hardee's, then that Hardee's closed and was taken over by Roy rogers again, now the Rockville store has closed. Seems like they are always closing stores.
Delete@ 9:48 The closures and conversions you described all happened in the 1990s. One store closing three decades later is no part of that trend, which was caused by Hardee’s failed takeover of Roy Rogers.
DeleteThe conversion of Hardee's to Roy Roger's in Gaithersburg was actually in 2003 but I see your point, still seems like Roy's does a lot of weird closing and moving around, but I get your point.
DeleteI've been mourning for days now since I heard. Everytime I pass by and see the windows covered, I get a tear in my eye. Now I have to go to Aspen Hill or Gaithersburg to get my Double R burger fix. Unacceptable! Aspen Hill doesn't have a drive trough either. I just read an article a few months ago saying that Roy's was expanding more throughout the area. I swear I read a while ago that they were gong to open one at Shady Grove and Frederick Rd. Now I'm hungry for a juicy Roy's roast beef.
ReplyDeleteThey haven’t gotten our order right many times. When we pointed it out to them they were nasty and made it seem like it was our fault so we stopped going.
ReplyDeleteThis location had way more problems than lack of a drive thru. The food has been bad for a while now, the last few months were really bad. They just couldn't seem to get it right at this location.
ReplyDeleteI remember back in early 1990s the real Roy Rogers did an in store appearance at the Germantown Roy Roger's, I didn't get to go,but wanted to. I think he was doing a promotional tour at his restaurants throughout united states.
ReplyDeleteFast food always has majority lame employees the aspen hill one is more safer during the day
ReplyDeleteThis store was run really poorly. The location is also tough—it’s always been weird on this little segment of the Pike.
ReplyDeleteI was unemployed all year and beef is too expensive. This is my fault.
ReplyDeleteYou are about to see inflation drop alot because gas is now so inexpensive, thanks to President Trump.also when you import millions of people into the country through open borders, the price of everything go's up.the more people we can send back home, the better for your beef prices.
DeleteGood riddance
