KC Filipino nears opening in Rockville

KC Filipino looks about ready to open in the College Plaza shopping center in Rockville. The restaurant has completed its pre-opening health inspection by Montgomery County, and all of the furniture appears to be in place. KC Filipino is located at 15108-A Frederick Road, most recently home to Matt's House of Kabob, which closed in November.

A Bite of China opens, MIchael's Noodles closes in Rockville

A Bite of China has opened in the College Plaza shopping center at 15106-A Frederick Road in Rockville. Asian-style kabob skewers are a house specialty. Meanwhile, Michael's Noodles has closed at Travilah Square. A source tells me the landlord declined to offer the popular restaurant a new lease to clear space for a new Trader Joe's grocery store at the shopping center.

Michael's Noodles is having an auction of its equipment - everything must go, from dining tables to sinks to walk-in coolers. Even the fax machine is up for grabs. See the auction page for full details on how to bid.

Some readers were asking where in College Plaza A Bite of China will be opening. Here are a couple of photos, including the "Coming Soon" signage the restaurant has posted on the storefront. A Bite of China will be at 15106-A Frederick Road.

Rockville is ready for A Bite of China

A Bite of China isn't just a Chinese television show anymore. It's also going to be the newest addition to Rockville's exploding Asian community and businesses. The restaurant will be located at 15106-A Frederick Road, in the College Plaza shopping center. A Bite of China has applied for a liquor license from Montgomery County. New York Mart opens in Rockville (Photos)

It's been a long road, but New York Mart has finally opened in the College Plaza shopping center at MD 355 and College Parkway. I was out of town for a large part of Saturday when it opened. But Rockville City Councilmember Tom Moore was among the first day's customers, and sent several photos (below). I went by yesterday and found the parking lot had many more cars than it has had on a Sunday since Magruder's closed, and quite a few people going into the store.

Hours will be 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and as you can see in the bottom photo, there will be a prepared food section in addition to groceries.

New banner, liquor license request up at New York Mart in Rockville (Photos)

More signs of the impending opening of Asian grocery store New York Mart in Rockville - literally. A new banner has been tacked up touting "Coming Soon", and the store has applied for its liquor license from Montgomery County. New York Mart will be located in College Plaza, at the intersection of Route 355 and College Parkway.

HAS CHICKEN OUT CLOSED IN ROCKVILLE?

Chicken Out recently moved up Rockville Pike to College Plaza, taking over the old A&W Restaurant. But recently, the parking lot is empty, and no one appears to be inside when I drive past. Yesterday evening, I pulled in during their business hours, and saw no evidence the restaurant was open. But no sign is posted to tell potential customers what is going on.

If the restaurant has closed, hopefully a fast food chain that doesn't currently have a restaurant in Montgomery County will move in, and make use of that drive-thru (Chicken Out did not use the drive-thru, but it is still there).

NEW YORK MART TO TAKE OVER COLLEGE PLAZA MAGRUDER'S SPACE IN ROCKVILLE (PHOTOS)

The vacant former Magruder's store in College Plaza on MD 355 finally has a tenant. New York Mart has leased the space, and will be the latest competitor in the international groceries category now flourishing in Rockville. New York Mart will literally be just up the road from Kam Sam Supermarket, Great Wall Supermarket and Maxim Gourmet Oriental Market along the Rockville Pike corridor. The burgeoning Asian population in Rockville has made it one of the prime spots for Asian food markets, and restaurants, in the DC area.

CHICKEN OUT OPENING SOON AT COLLEGE PLAZA IN ROCKVILLE (PHOTOS)

Chicken Out, which closed further south on Rockville Pike earlier this summer, is opening a new restaurant in College Plaza.

Located on the Pike just north of Montgomery College, the space has previously been home to a KFC and an A&W Restaurant. The latter has been greatly missed by burger aficionados, as A&W has no other locations in our area.
