Ice rink construction begins at Rockville Town Square (Photos)

One of the annual harbingers of the holiday season is the commencement of construction on the seasonal ice rink at Rockville Town Square. That work is now underway in the town square. To give you an idea of when opening day might be for skating this year, last year the rink opened on November 4. Lessons are offered, and reservations will be available.

Ice skating season is nearly upon us. That's driven home by the team of workers now busy assembling the ice rink at Rockville Town Square. The annual attraction in the town square has become so popular, it's even earned a listing on the Virginia tourism website under "Northern Virginia." Maybe we'll see a red fleece vested-Gov. Glenn Youngkin testing the ice for a White House run here this winter.

It's already that time of year again. A chill is in the air, and the ice rink at Rockville Town Square has emerged from storage. A crew is assembling the rink for what seems like an earlier start each year.

Temperatures below 50 degrees over the weekend may have visitors to Rockville Town Square in the mindset for winter. The square's ice rink is under construction now, coincidentally. Where's a Zamboni when you need one?

It would have been hard to convince people winter was over last week, when Rockville received its biggest snowfall of the season - after the season. But spring is asserting itself now at Rockville Town Square, where the popular ice skating rink in the square is being disassembled. How much for the Zamboni?

There are signs of winter at Rockville Town Square besides the chill in the air early this week. The ice rink is now being assembled in the square for its yearly winter run.

Federal Realty's property, which anchored the redevelopment of Rockville's Town Center, will celebrate its tenth anniversary on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 6:00-9:00 PM in the square. There will be live music, special offers and gift card contests from merchants, cake and an anniversary toast with Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton.

Word has it a chill is going to descend upon the area late this week. Appropriately, workers are now assembling the ice rink on the plaza at Rockville Town Square.

ROCKVILLE TOWN SQUARE ICE RINK OPENS TONIGHT! (PHOTOS)

Tonight is the grand opening of the ice rink at Rockville Town Square, and you're invited to the celebration.

The evening gets underway at 6:00 PM, with the Lloyd Dobler Effect performing live. After 7:00, you'll be able to meet a Washington Capitals player fondly remembered from the regrettably-now-demolished Capital Centre years, Alan May. Of course, May is today known for his hockey TV appearances, even if viewers weren't old enough to have seen him play.

Also after 7:00, meet the Capitals Red Rockers (the hockey version of cheerleaders), and Tommy McFly of 94.7 Fresh FM.

There will also be prizes, professional skating performances, and, finally, your own opportunity to lace up the skates and take to the home ice yourself.

Warmer spring weather is here - kind of. The Rockville Town Square ice rink has been packed up and put into storage for next winter.

Empty lockers and assorted machines are all that remains.

Last person out, turn off the Zamboni.

Get dressed up as 80s as you can when it's freezing outside - it's 80s Skate Night tonight at Rockville Town Square.

Tonight, Saturday, February 2, from 6-10 PM, the town square will be lit up a totally awesome neon pink.  Expect to skate to the greatest 80s sounds, like Def Leppard and Michael Jackson. But they are also asking for your requests, so you can help fill out the playlist from one of America's greatest decades.
