Rockville Maryland State Police barrack announces crackdown on street racing, modified exhaust systems

The Maryland State Police are partnering with local police departments to crack down on street racing and "excessive exhaust noise" in Montgomery County, the force's Rockville barrack announced yesterday. In a one-day action called Operation Gas Can on October 30, 2020, officers and state troopers made 3 arrests and 51 traffic stops, and issued 40 citations, 30 warnings, and eight equipment repair orders.

Making those stops were troopers from the Maryland State Police Rockville Barrack "N" and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, along with officers from the Gaithersburg City Police Department, Montgomery County Police Department, and Maryland Transportation Authority Police. Maryland officials are also cracking down on unauthorized use of Park & Ride lots by vehicles other than those driven by commuters.

    2. Thank you for Rockville and Montgomery County government and Police for taking this problem seriously. It has lowered our quality of life. There is absolutely NO NEED for this loud noise and certainly there should not be racing in the urban streets! I is a safety issue.

    3. A community resident should be able to enjoy their lives in a peaceful and safe community. Per Maryland Transportation Section 22-402, "a person may not use on the exhaust or "tail pipe" of a motor vehicle any extension or other device to cause excessive or unusual noise."

    4. Thank you!!! This has been a REAL problem over the years, diminishing quiet enjoyment of life. These loud motorists have very little regard for others and need to be reminded of the laws. We have one of these as a neighbor who makes these loud noises several times a DAY. They truly do not care who they are disturbing or that theyre breaking the law. Very disrespectful.

  2. The Police need to camp out on Rockville Pike between White Flint and Grosvenor. On Friday and Saturday nights arrests would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

  3. this is an unfortunate turn of events. I have never tried to annoy anybody with my exhaust and it should be within my rights granted by the constitution to own and drive a loud car. I am worried for the retention of my other rights now.

    1. Which part of the constitution guarantees your right to own and drive a loud car?

    2. I legit can't tell if this is a joke or not. If not, you should actually read the Constitution sometime. Oh, and stop breaking state transportation code and being a blight on the neighborhood.

    5. Maryland considers driving a privilege, not a constitutional right. So as long as you abide by the driving laws in the State of Maryland you have a right to drive. Violate those laws and you may lose your driving privileges. Maryland law prohibits modifications to increase noise levels from mufflers and exhaust systems.

  4. It was a little know fact to me that, unlike the muscle cars of the sixties, the muffler sounds emitted by cars today come from speakers. How odd that you now have to add artificial noise to cars muffler for appeal.

  5. Easier way to meet your monthly ticket quota than trying to catch drunk drivers and real criminals? If people don't like the sound of your car, whats next, tickets if your car is too dirty?

    1. Seems ridiculous I even have to explain this, but someone's car being dirty doesn't wake me up multiple times a week. Noise ordinances and muffler requirements exist for a reason: quality of life matters to everyone...except people who decrease the quality of life of their neighbors.

    2. Then move to the country. When I traveled in Europe and stayed at hotels in town, the noise of the scooters woke me up all the time. I just wouldn't live there.

  6. It's more about the loud exhaust and the 2 stepping. Shooting flames out the exhaust to draw attention to themselves and to mess up their engines to their vehicles.

  10. It's funny because literally every dangerous driver I've come across is driving a car like a Camry or a Tahoe. I can't count the amount of times I'm sitting at a light in my Mustang and some soccer mom takes off the second it turns green weaving in and out of lanes without even bothering to use turn signals. People act like forcing cars to be quieter is gonna force people to slow down when really its just going it make it easier since now their car is so quiet.

  11. So because those people enjoy their cars being louder than normal thats a problem? Please use funding better than targeting people with loud exhaust and drivers hanging out in parking lots. Please use funding to help with cyberbullying and drug smuggling. If hanging out in park and rides is a problem, why doesn't the state give car enthusiast a parking lot or a large area to go and park and hangout.

    1. Some people have to be able sleep a portion of each day in order to function at work. Illegally loud vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc) don't allow that to happen. Move somewhere where open headers are legal if you want to be over the Maryland noise limits.

    2. The thing is when you're driving your loud vehicles so loudly down roads near residences (where people SLEEP), you're not exactly "hanging out in parking lots." Also, park and ride facilities weren't build for you to hang out in. So please stop misusing facilities and depriving people of their quality of life.

  12. Can't say I'm surprised. Id love for my neighbor to get tickets. When they start their car the crack is so offensively loud. If you don't understand what I mean you've not experienced it. Any decent considerant person who lives in a neighborhood would not put this on. I own a garage queen car with an aftermarket exhaust. I decided against a louder exhaust because I have neighbors.

  14. Bunch of drama queens who are bitter after overpaying for their wannabe mansions that are really just ugly oversized townhomes near rich schools. Go home Karen.

  15. In my opinion, the solution is setting a specific value as to what is "Too loud" The state needs to set a decibel limit and or maximum amount of sound the said vehicle can make. Lets use other states as an example, say 95bd is the loudest it can be. Until then, its just up to personal opinion. If a maryland resident goes out and purchases a 2020 Ford Mustang or another OEM equipped car with a loud engine. One that passes maryland state inspection, but is considered too loud? How is that fair? There NEEDS to be a limit. Personally, live and let live. Cars are a massive part of American culture. You won't ever kill that.

    1. That already exists. In MD all legal cars conform to national OEM noise standards. And post inspection modifications that exceed those standards are not legal.

  16. If you don't like the noise ordinances (laws, for the not-so-bright loud vehicle owners) and enjoy waking people sleeping in their homes with illegally loud exhaust, move to somewhere where it is legal. A bunch of spoiled brat snowflakes have their feelings hurt becasue they can't make a lot of illegal noise. Waaaaaa... waaaaa.... waaa...

  18. Your cars are ugly, annoying and obnoxious. Also not a very good investment, Rick! Rockville pike isn’t a racetrack and you all are far from being professional drivers. My neighborhood used to be so peaceful. Why don’t you all just leave MD and move to bum fuck nowhere.. or have a blast on the autobahn! “Showing off” on Rockville Pike.. very classy...

  19. It doesn't bother me that these people have loud cars. What bothers me is when they rev and street race at 2:30 in the morning. You can hear it from miles away, and some of us need to sleep!
