Over 20 car windows smashed in theft rampage at Rockville apartment complex (Photos)

One or more thieves smashed windows on over 20 vehicles at a Rockville apartment complex early yesterday morning, April 29, 2023. Residents of Halpine View on Twinbrook Parkway say that the cars were broken into between 1:00 and 4:00 AM Saturday. The most common item stolen from the vandalized cars was the vehicle's airbag. Honda Civics were the primary target in the theft spree, which resembles a similar rampage at a Bethesda condo earlier this month.

Given that thieves are willing to break the windows even if you've locked your car, how can you keep your airbag from being stolen? Police and insurance industry experts recommend installing an anti-theft device on your steering wheel, such as The Club. Thieves who see such a device attached are likely to move on to the next car.

  1. Over 20 cars ! Amazing. How much would this cost to repair per auto and how much would the thieves get from their stolen goods ? It makes you wonder why these individuals couldn't make better money doing something else honest and non-destructive in this economy.

  2. No surprise why people want to arm themselves and protect themselves and their property and prevent repeat offenders.

  3. Why not secure those facilities with security or police! I really don't understand. Obviously who's working as a police attorney overnight hrs.

    1. Your comment makes absolutely no sense. 1) These crimes occurred in an open area, dimly lit, parking lot, which even with paid security (which will be passed on to the residents), is easy to avoid, and police will not nor should not be patrolling residential parking lots. 2) What the heck is meant in that last sentence?

  5. My family member was affected and it cost her the $500 deductible. I searched and saw the air bags go for as much as $500 on places like Facebook Marketplace and OfferedUp. It's a big shame. And yes, maybe the apt complex should have security or some deterrence in place. They are surely starting to charge rent like a place that is actually safer.
