Montgomery County police chief announces retirement

Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones abruptly announced his retirement this morning, January 30, 2024. He has served the public for 38 years, the last four of them as chief. His retirement will be effective Monday, July 1.

“It has been an honor to lead such a dedicated and talented department of officers and professional staff. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident in the department’s continued success,” Chief Jones said in a statement. “Now is the right time to retire. I am grateful for the support I have received throughout my career. While I may be stepping down a few months earlier than originally planned, I won’t be far. You will still see me around, actively engaging in and contributing to the well-being of Montgomery County.”

A department press release states that the search for a new police chief will begin immediately. Chief Jones did not cite a specific reason for his retirement, nor for moving his retirement date up to July 1.

    1. You forgot one word "everywhere". There, I fixed it for you.

    2. SocialNorm, so do you mean that we should tolerate the increase in crime and assaults? If DC, NYC, and Chicago are a s***show MoCo should follow suit? Do NOT normalize crime. It is NOT normal to be on edge and not feel safe in MoCo. It is NOT normal to be minding your own business but then find yourself a victim of a carjacking, robbery, or assault. Since you don’t mind it, you can go live with the rest of the scum that inflict harm on others but the rest of us would appreciate a return to a better definition of “normal.” One where the community isn’t marked with crime, violence, and fear.

    3. Don't put words in my mouth. YOU are the one who assumes that MoCo must live in a vacuum void of the issues facing the rest of the real world. We are not immune to what goes on around us, and cannot filter out its' impact. Perhaps YOU should pick up your sorry a** (along with the rest of your ilk) and move to an area not a "s**show". Maybe Russia is more of your style comrat. Bon Voyage.

    4. No one put words in your mouth. You clearly typed a snarky response to the poster above. And you told us to accept the world as-is. That’s like telling a MoCo rape victim that rape is everywhere, so just deal.

MoCo living in a vacuum void of the crap around us is not an assumption. It was a reality. We lived it. For decades we didn’t have the same issues as DC and PG and they’re a stone’s throw away. A filtered MoCo is not a far fetched concept because it existed. Those who know, know. And you, who don’t, are the one with the assuming mind that we must lower our standards to what’s “everywhere.”
You can’t be convinced because you didn’t experience it and can’t relate. You likely won’t either because as the true sorry a** here, you would rather insult people who aspire to live better than to concede to your level of acceptable. That’s not just sorry. That’s cowardly.

    1. According to the Department of Justice National Crime Victimization Survey, violent crime increased by 44% from 2021 through 2022.You should educate yourself about these things before you type. 😉

    2. Great impersonation of a Fox News idiot, but polls and surveys aren't relevant. This is not an issue where "feelings" matter. Crime is quantifiable. There is data. Data show that from 2021 to 2022 violent crime in the US fell 1.7%, including a 6.1% decline in murders and a 5.4% decline in rapes.

In 2023 violent crime plummeted further and faster. Full data sets aren't yet available, but quarterly data suggests it was likely the lowest rate in violent crime the country has seen in at least 50 years. Homicides alone fell over 10%. You should educate yourself about these things before you type.

    5. DC isn't representative of the US. It's a nonsensical outlier to cherry pick when effectively everywhere else saw a double digit drop in crime rates.

    6. You're wrong again, the National Crime victimization survey which is compiled by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, which is a branch of the Department of Justice states that crime has risen by 44% .

Even the FBI says carjacking has risen by 8.1% that's nationwide.
