ROCKVILLE BLACK FRIDAY DEALS 2014

Just when you've finished Thanksgiving dinner - you're just getting started. While football on TV was the after-dinner activity of choice for most when I was growing up, in 2014 it's time to zip up the winter coat, grab the credit card, and head to the local mall, shopping center or big box store to grab the deals before they're gone.

Here's a roundup of some of the best:

WESTFIELD MONTGOMERY MALL

The mall won't be open all night. Their hours on Thanksgiving Day will be from 6:00 PM to midnight, and then the mall will reopen at 6:00 AM on Black Friday. If you haven't visited in a while, you'll definitely be pleasantly surprised at the mall's makeover and expansion. Enjoy movies at the new, 16-screen ArcLight Cinemas and dining at the many new restaurants in the Dining Terrace. You'll also want to check out Santa Claus if you have kids, or the mall's holiday decorations, including the hanging 20' Christmas tree shown at the top of this post, which has 500 ornaments! Add extra time for parking, though, as the parking decks outside of Macy's have been demolished, and won't be replaced in time for Black Friday. Here are some of the deals you'll find around the new, updated mall:

HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT PIKE & ROSE (PHOTOS)

Given the big holiday displays every year at Bethesda Row, I've been wondering what Federal Realty would do for the season at its newest development, Pike & Rose. Those questions were answered this weekend, and I present the festive results here for your pleasure. The tree was not yet lit at this point, but there is plenty of Christmas and Chanakuh spirit in the air even so. Obviously, the scene will be more impressive once Phase 2 of the development has been built out, as the Christmas cheer is limited in distance. But if enough of the new retail stores can open in time, this could be a real sleeper spot for holiday shopping in Montgomery County - particularly for those purchasing apparel.

Federal Realty's Rockville Town Square seems to be behind Pike & Rose on the decorating schedule; their Bethesda Row development already has its decorations up.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY TRANSPORTATION FORUM TONIGHT IN DOWNTOWN SILVER SPRING

A transportation forum featuring candidates for the Montgomery County Council will be held tonight (May 29), at 7:00 PM, at the Silver Spring Civic Building (there is public garage parking directly across Ellsworth Drive from the building).

The topics covered are inspected to include transit, the Purple Line, the county's proposed Bus Rapid Transit system, and the M-83 Midcounty Highway Extended. Obviously, the BRT system proposal directly affects Rockville, and the Rockville Pike Plan outcome.

Martin Di Caro of WAMU FM will be the moderator. The debate is sponsored by the Coalition for Smarter Growth, Purple Line Now, Action Committee for Transit, Montgomery County Sierra Club, Montgomery Countryside Alliance, Washington Area Bicyclist Association, and the TAME Coalition.

EASTER BRUNCH IN ROCKVILLE 2014

Searching for Easter brunch in Rockville? This is the place to find the answers.

Amalfi Ristorante Italiano

This longtime Rockville favorite has not yet posted a menu or specials, but its Sunday hours are 1:30-9:00 PM.

American Tap Room

Let's hope for good weather and outdoor patio dining at Rockville Town Square! American Tap Room will be serving brunch from 10 AM to 3 PM on Easter Sunday. Here's the menu:

36 Maryland Avenue
(301) 838-4281

Chef Geoff's Rockville

Check out the fabulous Easter brunch menu at Chef Geoff's. Including one of my favorites, Big Shrimp and Very Gouda Grits - not that I'm trying to influence your decision or anything. For just $25.95, your brunch also includes a basket of Cheddar Drop biscuits, coffee and your choice of orange juice, mimosa or Bloody Mary. Sides and desserts are extra, and beignets are one of the options. I also like the convenient and free parking here.

12256 Rockville Pike

Founding Farmers

Founding Farmers will open an hour early, at 8 AM, on Easter Sunday. Due to popularity, the restaurant says its remaining reservations are for parties of 4 or less. They'll also serve brunch on Easter Monday, from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Here's their brunch menu.
