How do you make America's favorite chicken nugget better? Make it hot and spicy, of course. McDonald's has brought back Spicy Chicken McNuggets for a limited-time. A six-piece is $2.50 - not bad, considering what you pay for a four-piece McNuggets. Ranch is probably the best sauce for this McNugget variation.

Assault at Rockville park

City of Rockville police responded to a call regarding a 2nd-degree assault, and disorderly conduct, at a public park Sunday afternoon. The assault was reported at a park in the 1900 block of Veirs Mill Road at 2:33 PM, according to crime data. That appears to be the bike trail leading to Twinbrook Park.

Rockville Town Square CVS to close

The hits just keep on coming at Rockville Town Square. Another major tenant is on the way out. CVS Pharmacy "will be going out of business April 27th 2022," a sign in the elevator reads. The sign is directing customers to the Ritchie Center CVS at 799 Rockville Pike, once the Town Center location has closed. I suspect residents of the Town Center may consider switching to the Walgreens less than a block away.

CVS has been showing an increasing will to close locations in recent years, aiming to trim 900 stores, even as it vies with Starbucks for ubiquity across America. It's certainly possible that property owner Federal Realty could bring in another drugstore tenant to this space, although having that Walgreens really whittles down the options. The real estate firm has been trying to increasingly add resident-focused amenities and services like markets, spas, and home decor retailers to its properties, shops that can provide more practical necessities without requiring a car to go outside the development.

WMATA to address Rockville Metro safety concerns at Mayor & Council meeting tonight

Representatives of transit agency WMATA will appear before Rockville's Mayor and Council tonight at 7:00 PM, to respond to elected officials' concerns about safety and recent shutdowns of the system's Shady Grove and Rockville stations for extended periods. Outgoing WMATA General Manager Paul Wiedefeld addressed five concerns the Mayor and Council expressed in a letter in late 2021, ahead of tonight's presentation.

When asked why WMATA delayed in tackling defects on its 7000-series railcars, Wiedefeld completely dodged the question in his written response. Instead, he reiterated the general pablum the agency has released to the public since the removal of the 7000 cars led to reduced service, promising more details in the future when a consultant WMATA hired completes its investigation.

The timetable for the return of the 7000-series cars also remains vague in the written response to officials' second question. However, since Wiedefeld wrote the letter, it was announced that the cars won't be back in use until sometime this summer.

In response to two questions about rider safety during the pandemic, and how it will be maintained as more workers return to commuting in the future, Wiedefeld mentioned several policies and public relations initiatives. Some, such distributing face masks to unmasked riders, have been in place during the worst of the pandemic. Others, such as a new awareness campaign, will begin later this year.

Finally, officials asked how safety would become more transparent at WMATA. Wiedefeld did not have any new developments on that front, either. He pointed to existing accountability measures that have been in place for some time. City officials will have the opportunity to press WMATA on these and other less-than-upfront responses at the meeting tonight.

Hello Betty restaurant sets opening date in Rockville

Hello Betty
, a new restaurant and bar inside the Canopy by Hilton hotel at Pike & Rose, has set a grand opening date. The "surf and skate-inspired" restaurant on the second level of the hotel will open April 8, 2022, the company announced this morning. Menu items will include sustainably sourced peel-and-eat shrimp, fire-roasted crabs prepared in an open flame oven, fish and chips, and a classic crab boil.

A centerpiece for Hello Betty will be the patio boat bar, which is made out of an authentic, retired 40' Delta Deadrise boat that was hauled in - and up - to the deck. It will debut this summer. Drinks will include Hello Betty's signature Orange Crush. Although the company behind the restaurant is based in Denver, blue crabs and orange crushes are very much local favorites for those who vacation in Ocean City.

“We couldn’t be more excited to open Hello Betty in Pike & Rose, sharing a taste of board culture with the neighborhood," Hello Betty Bethesda General Manager Ryan Zemel said in a statement. “Hello Betty is casual, laid back and full of fun, promising exceptional service and fantastic food.” The indoor dining room will seat 138, and the patio can seat 167, including 23 at the boat bar.

Hulu Skewer House restaurant construction begins in Rockville

Construction on new Chinese restaurant Hulu Skewer House at 1488-B Rockville Pike has begun. Men were working inside and outside the space this weekend. A dumpster and some building materials have been delivered to the site, which was once home to the original Rockville Toys R Us. This is going to be a nice addition to the dining and grocery options at this retail center, which already include Yekta, Joe's Noodle House and the fantastic European Delight Russian grocery store.
