Another assault at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Montgomery County police responded to the third assault reported in a month at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda this past Friday night, March 29, 2024. A 2nd-degree assault was reported at the popular retail center at 8:30 PM Friday. Two other March assaults were reported at the mall, on March 1, and March 21.

The violent crime pace at the mall continues to increase in 2024, with four assaults in the first three months of the year. Only five assaults were reported in all of 2023 at the mall, which was a great improvement over the twelve that took place on the mall property in 2022. An armed robbery was also reported at the mall on March 25.

  1. This is what happens when certain groups pressure governments into defunding the police. When are people going to wake up and realize you can't have a functioning society without law enforcement? We need proactive policing and to lock the criminals up.

    1. This is what happens when certain groups funnel too much wealth into the hands of too few people. Crime is a result of desperation.

    2. The police were not defunded. The policing attitude is, Since the “certain group of people” don’t want us to harass you because of the color of your skin, we won’t police and protect you anymore. Don’t worry. Most of the victims of these crimes don’t look like you anyway.

    3. They need more police maybe you should apply to be one instead of saying it’s about defunding them

    5. The police have not been defunded. They are desperately looking for recruits. Defund the police was a poorly phrased term for adding social services, mental health and after school programs.

    6. The police weren’t defunded. You people and your boot licking fever dreams. There’s a police office IN THE MALL. A few of these assaults were shoplifters. White, Asian and/or Latin teen mob were shoplifting. They hit my store several times. 4 of them with shopper bags and each picks a rack or table and fills their bag and they leave. Some stores have LP officers and when they fight back when caught, they get the assault charge. Its costs nothing to not be classist or racist.

    7. "Defund the Police" or hold the police accountable to equitable treeatment to all people, regardless of race or status? Stop the 45 BS. No one wants the police shooting to kill unarmed individuals contacted for minor or moderate offenses. Nor should our Police force choose to quit PROTECTING and SERVING simply because they can't get way with brutal abuse on citizens. Those bad cops who have an inability to work for and protect all people should in fact quit the force, and make room for those fine officers who desire to protect and serve, while ridding our communities of the trash no-gooders. Instead of paid leave and countless lawsuits against the depeartment/TAX PAYERS, that funding should be allocated to the proper mental health resources to respond and de-escalate versus turn into an unnecessary Polkice shooting in which millions will be paid to grieving families because of a trigger happy cop who lacks the poise to meet deadly force with deadly force.

    8. The defend the police movement has been very successful at damaging not only police morale, but when the police are afraid that they are going to be put in prison from doing a simple traffic stop that turns violent, then the police have basically been defunded. The defend movement is to blame.

    10. The defund movement is to blame for poor police morale and officers being scared of going to jail for only doing their job

    11. Parents need to be more involved with their kids and know what they are doing so they dont grow up to be out of control.

  2. Dont blame the police. Blame the court system that doesn't prosecute or administers minimum to no sentences.

  3. exactly what Elrich wants. Destroy humanity, education, commerce and common sense. More concerned about gas blowers than funding the police. He actually mandated electric police cars. They lasted 1 hour on full charge with all the computers and equipment.

  4. Dont We pay more taxes than other counties in MD. They should care about public safety, but, I think the whole of government in the country has lost sights of the fact they work for us, not us for them. What are we paying for if not public safety. They are NOT listening to us, they do whatever they please, with private security paid for by our tax dollars. Vote them out!!

  5. has nothing to do with defunding the police. no evidence defunding has affected Montgomery Police

  6. A mall is private property. It should have sufficient security personnel in place to discourage bad actions. It isn’t the responsibility of the MCPD to patrol the mall.

  7. The Government needed to do somethings about this, looked like this is getting worse

  8. Consider describing the offenders, perhaps a pattern will develop.

  9. Quality of life has steadily declined and crime has steadily risen ever since we moved here in ‘86. Looking forward to putting MoCo and MD in the rear view mirror.

  10. Give more details. Where in the mall did the attacks take place? Inside or outside? Who was attacked? Describe the attacker(s)
