Regal Germantown signage removed (Photos)

Signage has been stripped from the facade of the former Regal Germantown cineplex at 20000 Century Boulevard. It closed about a month ago. The building is for sale, and is likely to be redeveloped as housing unless another theater chain takes it over. Regal Germantown started this century as a Hoyts Cinema. One of the newest theaters in Montgomery County at that time, it stagnated into obsolesence over the next two decades, failing to add the upgrades and amenities like recliners that are standard circa 2024.

  1. Saw some good movies here back in the day. I feel like this post (and a lot of this site) is angrily pining for MoCo as it was circa 2002. That world doesn’t exist anymore, was a weird moment in history. What do we going forward? Copy NoVa? Is that politically realistic or responsible? I’d support seeing a lot of the empty office buildings along 270 change over to data centers—is that worth working for?

    1. Personally, I'm pining for a Rockville earlier than 2002. Putt Putt Golf, Toys R Us, and a Congressional Plaza with a movie theater and JCPenney where I can buy a Fox polo shirt.

    2. I remember that movie theater in Congressional Plaza, it was great, I saw a few movies there in mid 1980s. Putt putt Golf and games also, went to the arcade all the time.

  2. Mr Dyer, I am pining for one earlier then that. One with the Villa Theater, the Confederate statue, Maryland Motors and People's Drug and Mack's Hardware. All in the middle of town. And watching the airplanes land at Congressional Airport before it became a shopping center.

  3. Nostalgia is neat, but doesn’t get you too far in making things better.
