RASA to replace Slapfish in Rockville

Slapfish
has closed at 12033 Rockville Pike in the Montrose Crossing shopping center. This is not a total surprise, as the restaurant was urgently seeking a sublease over the summer. The chain itself has run into choppy waters in recent times, canceling a massive number of planned openings in Texas and Arkansas. Slapfish will be replaced by RASA, a fast-casual Indian restaurant with four existing locations in the D.C. area.

Signage has been torn off the storefront. The restaurant did leave a cordial goodbye message in the window, which is a good strategy to at keep a friendly impression of the brand in customers' minds. Diners are being redirected to the chain's not-exactly-convenient Ashburn location. Located in a more business-friendly jurisdiction, the Ashburn restaurant appears to be more resilient against the stormy seas than its Montgomery County counterpart was.

See's Candies opens at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Lily Pulitzer deals with "maintenance issues"

See's Candies
has opened at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The seasonal candy store has a variety of chocolate assortments in gift boxes. There are also Christmas-themed gift bags on display. Look for See's Candies on Level 1 of the mall, next to Journeys.

Lily Pulitzer
was temporarily closed at the mall yesterday. According to a sign posted at the store, the closure was due to "maintenance issues." No reopening date was specified on the message.

Vera Bradley closes at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda

Vera Bradley
has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Their space has been cleared out. Vera Bradley opened here in June 2012. That's an impressive run, but apparently not enough to survive the moribund Montgomery County economy that has claimed so many victims in recent years.

Miller's Ale House has closed in Rockville

Miller's Ale House
has closed at 1471 Rockville Pike. The restaurant and bar operated there for a decade.  Miller's had a 4.1 out of 5 rating on Google and Facebook, a 3.5 on TripAdvisor and 3 stars on Yelp, so they weren't exactly run out of town. Its closure really is the end of an era, in a way.

When Miller's Ale House opened in 2012, it looked like a new age of nightlife might be upon us in Rockville. Bar Louie and American Tap Room had also just opened at Rockville Town Square. And there were old standbys like Gordon Biersch and Hooters. Look around in 2022, and every single one of those businesses is gone.

This may simply be Rockville's chapter in the larger book of Montgomery County nightlife being slammed shut over the last decade. The county had a good number of bars and nightclubs around 2010, and certainly was positioned to improve with the right policies at the county level. Just the opposite ended up happening.

It started with a major hike in the County energy tax, one that saw businesses like Target and Magruder's having to dim their lighting, posting apologetic signs explaining it was due to the energy tax. A series of other anti-business votes were taken by the Council in the ensuing years, over the objections of business owners.

Melvin Thompson of the Restaurant Association of Maryland warned councilmembers in 2016 that Montgomery County's restaurant sector had gone flat since 2012. In contrast, Thompson noted, Fairfax County's restaurant sector had grown by 6% in the previous year alone. Frederick County's had jumped 5.4% over the same period. The Council ignored Thompson, and passed more taxes (including a whopping 9% property tax increase), more regulations, and a $15 minimum wage.

At the same time, the Council also lashed out at food trucks. Part of the bubbling up of a potentially vibrant new era of nightlife was the new phenomenon of food trucks, which would park in legal parking spots in busy areas at lunchtime in Bethesda, Rockville and Silver Spring. Some would also park in nightlife areas later, to serve patrons emerging after bars closed for the night.

The Council banned such mobile food operations, limiting food trucks to private property. Trucks - the majority of which were based in Washington, D.C. - retreated over the Maryland border into the District. Office workers in Friendship Heights had a clear view of trucks still working the lunch hour just over the line in D.C. Montgomery County's food truck scene was gone, with the exception of those who were invited to cater private events, or to park on private property like gas stations.

Over the last decade, at least 21 nightspots closed in downtown Bethesda alone. Incredibly, all of those closures followed the Council's 2012 "Nighttime Economy Initiative." Hyped to the max by some local media outlets at the time, the initiative - along with the rest of the misguided Council actions of the last decade - ended up tanking the nighttime economy countywide. The demise of Miller's is only the latest example of that collapse.

What's inside this abandoned Sears store, nearly 4 years after it closed? (Photos)

The Sears store at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda closed almost four years ago. A redevelopment project that would include the footprint of the shuttered department store appears to have been put on hold, while the mall's owner attempts to find a buyer for the property. So what's going on in there? Surprisingly, a sneak peek around the entrance barricades reveals a space that still looks very much like a Sears store, and not filled with dust and cobwebs.

This vacant Rockville Chuy's restaurant is frozen in time (Photos)

Chuy's
has been closed at Federal Plaza in Rockville for more than two years now. Other than the removal of the flatscreen televisions in the bar, it still looks the same as it did during the four years it was open. Signage remains on the outside of the Tex-Mex restaurant.

Why Chuy's closed and never reopened after the pandemic lockdown of 2020 remains a mystery. The food was very good. Other Chuy's locations in the region remained open and are still packing in diners today. They never even collected their furniture and extensive interior decor.

Berrycup closes in Rockville

More sad news from Rockville Town Square. Berrycup has closed at 36-B Maryland Avenue. The frozen yogurt shop had changed owners a few years ago, and switched to making their yogurt in-house. Apparently the changes were not enough to survive, and their space is now one of many available for lease at the development.

Dairy Queen closes at Montgomery Mall in Bethesda (Photos)

Sad news for Dairy Queen fans, including me. Dairy Queen has closed at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Last night, the Dairy Queen stall was shuttered and dark. Menu boards and a significant amount of equipment had been removed, but the sign was still up. Today, a mall spokesperson confirmed that Dairy Queen has permanently closed.

Big Al's Subs and Soups closes at Montgomery Mall (Photos)

Big Al, we hardly knew ye. It was only last December that Big Al's Subs and Soups opened in the Dining Terrace food court at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. Al was big, but apparently wasn't "too big to fail." The Big Al's stall in the food court has been stripped of signage, and was dark and deserted Wednesday.

Goldberg's New York Bagels

Danker Furniture closes in Rockville (Photos)

Danker Furniture
has permanently closed on Rockville Pike. The company says orders are still being processed, even though the physical store has closed. Customers can call 301-881-6010 if they have questions.

A sad goodbye for a longtime fixture of Rockville Pike retail. They used to have a Bethesda location, as well. Is your home a "Danker-designed home?" Relive some nostalgic Danker Furniture memories in this YouTube video shot inside the store in 2008, and with a 1987 Danker TV commercial.
