Montgomery County's first Sheetz opens in Gaithersburg (Photos)

Montgomery County was years overdue to have a Sheetz convenience store, and it has finally happened at 751 Progress Way, off of MD 355 in Gaithersburg. Now that Montgomery County's first Sheetz is open, the first thing I noticed is that this store is about half the size of the ones I stop at on road trips. However, the outdoor dining area is spacious.

Not surprisingly, given Montgomery County's archaic liquor sales monopoly and rules, there is no Beer Cave at this Sheetz. There isn't even any beer! Again, Montgomery County Prohibition-era liquor rules still in effect. The store does have a drive-thru, and self-checkout.

Given the smaller size, the store doesn't have the amount of merchandise I'm used to seeing at Sheetz. But, no complaints! The made-to-order food and beverages are among the major reasons people stop at Sheetz, and they are finally available in Montgomery County!

  1. Nothing like a little whine to dampen the mood, it's too small, they don't have any beer or wine, there's not enough stuff to choose from, OMG. Well, in your supposed travels I guess you've never been to any in the Frederick area, which are half the size of this outlet. Try getting around a little more before biting the hand you're eating from. GEEZS!

    1. 2:17: I don't know what the source of your rage is, nor your need to defend the Montgomery County political cartel. My observations about the store were highly relevant to the article. These are things Sheetz fans, or people who haven't been to a Sheetz, would be interested to know. Not everyone has been to a Sheetz, and would like to know what to expect.

No, I haven't been to the Frederick Sheetz locations, but the ones I've been to out-of-state have been significantly larger. Once again, it appears your beloved Maryland and Montgomery County elected officials have delivered a poor business climate where smaller stores are necessary, and where beer and wine cannot be offered.

No hand is feeding me, so there's no hand to bite. I've been "getting around," and therefore know a bit more about Sheetz stores outside of Maryland than you do. Apparently, it is a grave sin in Montgomery County to share that knowledge with my readers.

  2. I hope you made it to the $2.99 gas war they had Thursday and Friday, in competition with Royal Farms.

  3. Sheetz in Virginia have a nice selection of beer and wine. Given this is the first Sheetz in Montgomery County, aren't they allowed to carry alcohol? Seems like a miss to not offer.

    1. You are correct that the rules allow that each store chain can offer beer and wine at just one of their locations in the County. Perhaps they have in mind one of the other locations they are looking at in MoCo for that purpose, although the Walnut Hill (the only future Sheetz publicly identified by the company so far) store would theoretically have lower traffic than the one right off I-270. I don't have a sense of whether every retail chain takes advantage of this one-store option or not - for example, is there an Aldi, Lidl or Harris Teeter location in the County that currently sells beer and wine?

  4. Those long aisles of sugary soda, candy and junk food are such a sad testimonial to the 21st Century American diet. Expected for the car-dependent customer base of Sheetz. Thankfully folks in southern Montgomery County and DC have much healthier lifestyles.
