Rockville police respond to 3rd assault in 5 weeks at same grocery store

Rockville City police responded to a report of a 2nd-degree assault at a grocery store in the 600 block of Hungerford Drive Friday afternoon, September 15, 2023. The assault was reported at 12:00 PM. That's the same Giant supermarket where an employee was punched last month, less than 24 hours after another aggravated assault was reported there August 11. Friday's incident makes this the third time in five weeks that police have responded to an assault call at the store.

  1. So sad. That's a busy store with some really fine employees.

    1. I know that the store has a problem with shoplifting. They have store detectives now stopping people at the door who they have reason to believe were leaving with stolen goods. I was a store detective at a department store for a few years, and it should be no surprise to anyone that when confronted sometimes the thieves react violently. The store I worked for had our backs and allowed us to carry non lethal defense weapons such as black jacks. If you frequent the Rockville store you may have noticed that some items, like soap are now in locked/alarmed plexiglass boxes.

  2. Yes. The store and its employees are great. Not their fault. This is a City of Rockville problem.

    1. Allowing the mentally deranged to freely roam the city and county. Back in the day, they would have been safely housed in State mental institutions.

    2. @3:44 You are really all over the map on this one. First you say the problem is the City's fault, now you say it's the fault of the city, county, and also the state?? GET REAL! Stop living in the past and "stay woke" with the de-empahsis on mental health care instituted by conservatives waaay back in the seventies, with the closing of all community mental health centers under the Nixon administration. Now there's no safety net or the concern needed for this segment of the population. Learn to live with it.

    3. Agree with your historical assessment and to not play the blame game. That said, the Giant management needs to step up the security there with a tighter eye on people in the store. If not, they may have liability.

Have shopped there many times, lived and worked in town center & locally as an attorney, who also handles such litigation & criminal matters. Have a deep understanding of mental health issues too.

Yes, it is a reality but does not mean ‘we have to simply live with it’ either.

  8. The way I see it, there’s no real punishment for crimes anymore. Employees are told not to confront people who blatantly steal right out in the open! Keep voting democrat. You get what you pay for

    3. The store employees don't confront the thieves, because they could easily be armed with a gun, a knife, or a crowbar. The thefts are really upsetting, but a badly injured or murdered employee would be so much more so!

  10. These comments are all over the place it’s frustrating just to skim through. It’s either liberals are delusional and are responsible for all the crime, or conservatives are insane and don’t know anything, or Obama is to blame for this, or Trump is responsible for this specific assault in Rockville, the really bizarre comments are the ones believing that it’s because we allow the criminals and mentally deranged to freely roam the county that this type of stuff ever even happens in the first place. Seriously?

  11. Has it occurred to anyone that while politics may play some part in behaviors, the problem is that food and household goods are so expensive that people are feeling desperate? Is that an excuse for stealing and violence? No. Supply issues caused prices to skyrocket and did not go back down when those issues went back to normal. I was in a store and heard employees talking about how their management chooses to keep prices higher even though the costs are lower now. Corporate greed is the problem. No one should feel so desperate that they have to steal.
