DMV Iron Gym "coming soon" to Rockville

DMV Iron Gym
has posted "coming soon" signage at its future space at Federal Plaza in Rockville. Located next to Micro Center, the gym was expected to open next month, but the signage gives a more generous "Fall 2023" opening target. The 16,000-square-foot gym will be filled with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, and represent the local chain's first venture into Maryland.

DMV Iron Gym to open in Rockville

DMV Iron Gym
is expanding into Montgomery County. It will open a new facility at Federal Plaza in Rockville this fall, property owner Federal Realty announced Monday. “For years, we’ve been hearing from our members that they would love to see us expand into Maryland," DMV Iron Gym owner Leo Williams said yesterday. "We were excited by the central location of Federal Plaza in Rockville, and look forward to bringing a state-of-the-art gym and training facility to Montgomery County.”

The 16,000 square foot gym will open in September 2023. It will be located next to Micro Center.

Forme Life opens kiosk at Montgomery Mall

Gyms have been hit hard by the events of the last year, and the success of Peloton in filling that vacuum with a home alternative is attracting new companies to the fitness marketplace. A new entry in late 2020 was Forme Life, a full-length mirror that turns into a "life-size" fitness coach when you activate the screen. Now you can see Forme Life up-close and personal with their new kiosk at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda.

You can also make an appointment to try it out at the kiosk. Forme Life promises it will include a review of all the features of the device, as well as a quick workout. Cinnabon first!

Gold's Gym renewing lease at Rockville Town Square

Rockville Town Square has suffered another round of business closures over the last year, but the development is going to hold on to one of its biggest tenants. Gold's Gym is going to renew its lease at the Federal Realty property, according to an agenda item for the October 5 meeting of the Mayor and Council.

This is good news for several reasons. First, it is one of the largest spaces at the development. Second, it is a major traffic generator for the other businesses in the Town Square. And it is an important amenity for residents in the Town Square and immediate area around it, where there is not a huge number of other gym options.

Congressional Plaza construction update (Photos)

Construction continues on the future Barnes & Noble bookstore and FITRow section at Congressional Plaza. As you can see, much more has been done outside than inside at the Barnes & Noble. The opposite is true inside FITRow. Some branding signage has been installed and work is well underway building what will be three new fitness studios by three different chains.

Capriotti's is out, Pure Barre is in at Galvan; 9Round to open at The Terano in Rockville

Say it ain't so, Joe (Biden)! The much-hyped Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, a favorite of the Vice President, has pulled out of the Galvan at Twinbrook development, I have confirmed. Thanks to the anonymous tipster who brought this to my attention. I had wondered what was going on with that, given that the franchisee had set a fall 2015 opening date.

But the JBG development continues to lease up with other tenants, trading high-calorie sandwiches for a calorie-burning fitness studio - Pure Barre.

Not to be outdone in the sweat department, JBG's The Terano development is adding 9Round, a kickboxing gym that promises to burn up to 500 calories in 30 minutes. "Say goodbye to the boring big box gyms," the 9Round website advises.

L.A. BOXING ROCKVILLE TO BECOME UFC GYM

L.A. Boxing has been acquired by UFC Gyms, a company affiliated with - yes - the UFC mixed martial arts league. Hence, L.A. Boxing Rockville's location at 192-A Halpine Road will soon change its name to, you guessed it, UFC Gym.

The new brand will bring a new workout program to the facility, combining general fitness with techniques derived from mixed martial arts.  However, workouts will accomodate all levels from beginner to experienced. And don't be alarmed if you are a current member - they're not going to force you to fight fellow members. It will be a fitness club, not a Fight Club!

Expect the hefty corporate backing of UFC to boost your perks and bring new kinds of special events, however.
