This is getting to be a regular thing along this stretch of Veirs Mill Road in the Twinbrook area of Rockville - what's going on in the woods there? When a Rockville drugstore opening meant free cigars for men, and hot steaks and crab cakes

The postmodernist critique posits that many Americans are nostalgic "for a past that never was." And then that argument gets shattered with the quick perusal of an advertisement for a "Get Acquainted Day" at Peoples Drug in the Twinbrook Shopping Center in 1957 Rockville, Maryland. In contrast to a 21st century where CVS Pharmacy and Walgreens stores open on every other block with little fanfare, this Rockville drugstore opening was a major event. Even Mr. Peanut was on hand.

Look at all of the 1950s cars lined up neatly outside the store. And unlike the Peoples Drug-eating CVS, you were going to leave this event with much more than a receipt you could wrap a mummy in. If you had a family, it was truly going to be a haul. Free Havana No. 9 cigars "for the men!" Free earrings "for the ladies!" Free ice cream cones, comic books and coloring books for the children! And free Coca-Colas, Wilkins Coffee and "miniature loaves" of Bond Bread for everybody (the Bond Bread factory in Washington D.C. still stands at 2146 Georgia Avenue NW).

Today's CVS offers a small convenience store presentation of essential grocery items and snacks. But the 1957 Twinbrook Peoples Drug had real, hot food in its Streamlined Fountain and Grill. There, one could order the "finest sandwiches and special plates," ice cream treats, beverages and platters of steak, veal or crab cakes. Compare that to today, and the devolution of society has rarely come into such stark focus. Sure, we don't need the TV tubes and film development of this Peoples Drug, but when's the last time you got a steak, crab cakes and free Havana No. 9 cigars at CVS?

Twinbrook Laundromat construction continues in Rockville

The Twinbrook Laundromat looks closer to completion from the outside, but largely-covered windows and construction fencing make it difficult to gauge full extent of the progress inside. A sign has been installed on the front facade, and another one at the roadside.
They'll be competing with three other laundromats in the area, and it will be interesting to see what their operating hours are. The Aspen Hill Laundromat says it is open 24 hours, a rare throwback to the golden age of Aspen Hill, while the others tend to be closed between midnight and 6:00 AM.

Gilead's Remdesivir effective in Rockville study of monkeys with coronavirus covid-19

A study at the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases {(NIAID) in Rockville has shown that pharmaceutical firm Gilead's experimental Remdesivir anti-viral treatment slowed the progression of the covid-19 coronavirus in monkeys infected with the virus. It also reduced lung damage.

Early administration of the drug made it more effective, according to a report on the study by HospiMedica.com. The drug did not reduce the monkey's shedding of the virus while infected, however, which means they would remain contagious even while on Remdesivir, if this study's finding holds in further clinical testing.

The NIAID is at 5601 Fishers Lane in the Twinbrook area of Rockville.

Rockville's Los Primos Tex-Mex & Grill is elite on new Yelp Top 100 list

Rockville is one of only two cities in the Washington, D.C. region to appear on Yelp's new Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. for 2020 list. Los Primos Tex Mex & Grill at 12303 Twinbrook Parkway is the only restaurant in the entire state of Maryland to appear on the list. The only other spot in the D.C. area to make the cut is Farmbird, certainly a worthy choice on H Street in the District.

Los Primos also features Salvadoran cuisine, in addition to Tex-Mex. The restaurant opened in November 2018.
