ROCKVILLE RESIDENTS MISSING HOWARD, " THE WORLD'S BEST CASHIER " AT TWINBROOK SAFEWAY (VIDEO)

Shoppers at the Twinbrook Safeway are wondering why their favorite cashier was apparently let go by the store. Howard, an energetic and affable employee who brought game show enthusiasm to the checkout line, has been named "The World's Best Cashier" by one fan. You can see him in action in this video.

One shopper has written to the company asking for Howard to be rehired, and expressing concern about the decline of the store. "Many of us still shop there ONLY because the cashiers are wonderful people whom we appreciate and like, Howard and Ophelia especially," she wrote.

Given the preponderance of glitchy self-checkout machines and unmanned (and un(wo)manned) checkout lines in grocery stores these days, you'd think stores would want to hold on to popular and energetic employees.

  1. I'm a Aspen Hill resident and MANY of us have written to corporate to protest this. That safeway is horrible, and he was the only good thing about it.

In addition, one employee from Safeway has been suspended for telling a customer that Howard was fired.

  2. Twinbrook Safeway all-star cashier Mr. Howard Abrams was terminated while on vacation with his family in Brazil. He saves all his vacation to spend the one month in Brazil. He is the most courteous, enthusiastic, and positive cashier at the Twinbrook Safeway. I always seek him out when I check out. Note Safeway stores nationwide (CA, WA, MD, VA, DC) that I utilize are notorious for waiting lines of up to 25 people. Howard makes these lines bearable.

  3. The thread on our neighborhood website about this is 53 replies long right now. Everyone is so very supportive of this awesome man, Howard. And we can't believe how unjust Safeway has been.

    We're standing with you, Howard!

  4. So many grocery stories are well-stocked and brightly lit, but the staff make the Twinbrook Safeway a true neighborhood store. Howard, Cindy, and the rest keep us coming back. They take the time to greet us, remember our family members, both near and far, and make our few moments with them fun and friendly. They care. So very different from all the other grocery stores whose employees clock in, clock out, and barely utter a cursory greeting. We all know this store is slated to close down soon and that Safeway has no intentions of finding places for the staff that currently work there, but why fire their best? Especially while he's on vacation with his family?! Why suspend another one who only told an inquiring customer truth? Is instilling fear of tyranny the right way to manage a neighborhood grocery store? So sad that Corporate HQ and the regional manager would condone this management style. Very disturbing in this day, this age, this country.

  5. Howard is pursuing a grievance through his union, UFCW Local 400. It may be heard in a week or so. Meanwhile there is a Twitter #rehirehowardsafeway and comments may be left on safeway.com and https://www.facebook.com/Safeway?ref=br_tf. Howard deserves your support!

  6. Anyone who shops at Twinbrook Safeway knows that it has been going downhill for a few years. Howard was the store's bright spot. Like most Safeway shoppers, I always got in his line if he was working. It didn't matter how long the line was. He was fast, never made mistakes, and allways made you smile. A true Twinbrook treasure.

  7. I'm glad that Mr.Howard is pursuing the matter, but he has such great talent and we as customers and fans of his show should contact the media to try and move him to the next level. Let's SPIN and WIN for Howard.

  8. I would always look for Howard to check out,he would always say something funny or something up lifting to me or to a customer in front of me,its rare to have someone with so much great energy have this negative thing happen to him lets get him his job back something better.

    1. Ed -- I signed the petition and forwarded the link to about 10 other people, hopefully they will sign it and also pass it on. I've known Howard for at least 5 years and like everyoine else has been saying, he is by far the best cashier I've ever seen. The friendliest, the most curteous, and yes the fastest. If any cable TV network is looking for a new show, it could be "The Cashier" starring Howard Abrams. I get in his line no matter how long it is and how short the other lines are. We always have a "back & forth" conversation. He loves the Oakland Raiders and I'm a Cowboys fan, so we talked a lot about football during the season. I will be at the meeting on Tuesday, the 24th, at 7:00 pm at the Twinbrook Recreation Center. The more that attend, the better it will be. Howard has said he will be there and he deserves our support, so let's all show him how much we care.

  13. Everyone should contact Brian Baer, President of Safeway, Eastern Division
    His phone Number: (301) 918-6500 extension 6870
I left Mr. Baer a voicemail to recommend Howard to not only be rehired, but to be hired at the new Twinbrook Metro "The Galvan" location as a manager. I said that he has an energy and dedication that would be great for training other cashiers at the new Twinbrook location that will be opening.

Unjustified termination of the Twinbrook Safeway Store all-star cashier Mr. Howard Abrams 1 Feb
    Michael Smith from Twinbrook
    Neighbors,

I learned today, while at the Twinbrook Safeway, that all-star cashier Mr. Howard Abrams was terminated while on vacation with his family in Brazil. He was placed on the schedule, while in Brazil during his annual family visit. He saves all his vacation to spend the one month in Brazil. He is the most courteous, enthusiastic, and positive cashier at the Twinbrook Safeway. I always seek him out when I check out. I have shopped less and less at that Safeway over the past five-ten years,
as it gradually devolved into the cesspool it has become. The only thing
keeping me stopping in was Howard, as my kid kind of grew up laughing at
his antics and Howard always made her feel special, as he tried to do with
all customers. I remember ten years ago you could debate whether that
Safeway or the Giant in Montrose was the better store. Now look at it.

This is what I just sent to Safeway:

    To the Business Ethics Department:

I am writing to you on behalf of "Howard" and the OTHER cashiers at our local Safeway in the Twinbrook neighborhood of Rockville, MD (Twinbrook Shopping Center, 1902 Veirs Mill Road,Rockville, MD,(301) 762-0200)

Over the last few years, we have seen this Safeway get progressively dirtier and less well managed as it appears Safeway is trying to hold down profits and justify closing this store, which actually is VERY important to many people in our neighborhood.

Many of us still shop there ONLY because the cashiers are wonderful people whom we appreciate and like, Howard and Ophelia especially. In contrast, the recent managers, especially "Miss P", have been cold and rude to many people. Many of your longtime employees at this Safeway have expressed fears to me about the management's abusive and intimidating tactics.

I don't know why the management felt justified in firing "Howard", who was certainly an ASSET in bringing customers into the store and sending them out again with a kind word and a smile. He is a hidden gem who should have been RECOGNIZED by the management years ago. Certainly, while we expect that at any time our Safeway is going to be closed and bulldozed, and while Safeway is planning to open a new store shortly on Rockville Pike, it would be good management to KEEP all your excellent employees from Twinbrook and transfer them to the new store.

I abhor management who "manage" by creating problems and then taking credit by solving the problems they create. That is how our Twibnrook Safeway seems to be run. That is not good management and you as the corporate offices should not tolerate it. Just from a dollar point of view, you would know how much it costs to hire, train, and retain new employees. Industry standard is about 1/2 of an employee's yearly wage.

I urge you to rehire "Howard" and also look into how the Twinbrook Safeway is being managed.

    Sincerely,

    Christina Y. Ginsberg
    Twinbrook Resident and Safeway Shopper

Gavin has a good idea, but we will have to provide details to any media outlet. If someone who knows can post the facts including the reactions of coworkers and store managers, we could start with some of the local media and see if other media become interested. Okay, friends and neighbors, I just got off the phone with Howard! As Rosalee has said, Howard is over the moon about the support he is getting. As a former union officer, my assessment is that his grievance is going to need our help. His termination was a result of questionable record-keeping practices. As you might surmise, Howard's dependability and productivity are not in question. Other employees, Howard said, are scared. Apparently one employee innocently informed customers - who asked - that Howard had been fired. She was suspended by the management. I asked Howard to put me in touch with his union rep so that we can strategize. I hope to hear from him soon, but it would be unwise to not coordinate with the union's efforts on Howard's behalf. It appears that the good intentions of one customer may have led to the suspension of the employee. Anyway, I'll continue to update with developments. If anyone has decided to avoid shopping at the store because of this, I would urge you to let Safeway management know of your decision and the reason for it. Again, stay tuned!

I think you have a good point. I also think Howard wants his job back to secure his pension rights and be in position to leave Safeway flat if he has other career opportunities!

Howard's grievance will be heard at Safeway HQ in Lanham at 3 pm on Friday [2/20]. Howard is willing to have us do any combination of the following things:

    1. Send copies of all comments made thus far including names to the HR person who will hear the case.
    2. Send a letter, signed by all who wish to sign, to the Safeway Eastern Division President whose office is also in Lanham.
    3. Flood that president's office with telephone calls, referring to the new store that will open in the new development on Chapman Avenue.

There's not a lot of time to put this all together but I'm confident that it will make a difference, and so is worth doing. So, friends and neighbors, who's up for what? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Let's try and make Howard's appearance at the TCA meeting a victory celebration!

I would be happy to call the president's office. Can you post the number here? Are we referring to the new store because we want to suggest he hire Howard there? I would also be happy to sign a letter. Is this going to be an email letter? Just tell me where.

Wow now there is absolutely no reason to shop there. I avoid that store like the plague because of the horrid customer service. He is the best worker they have!!! He should be made manager of the store! I hope he gets his job back.

Please sign and share as widely as possible. My daughter just returned from 3 weeks in Latin America. After she "debriefs" the family, I'll get back with some other ideas.

Neighbors: I emailed the so-called Ethics Department and, after a reasonable wait with no reply, I prompted them and received the following reply. The individual's name (Teresa McDaniel) may be of some use to anyone who does further follow-up. A textbook example of passing-the-buck.

    From: "business.ethics@safeway.com"
    >Dear Sir/Madam: I received the attached information through my Neighborhood blog and I agree with my neighbor that Safeway's termination of Mr. Abrams is unfortunate and (as an attorney, I think) probably illegal.
    >
    >I respectfully request Safeway to reconsider this action.
    >
    >I will be watching for his return to work. If I do not see him again, Safeway will not see me again.

The petition is really taking off, friends and neighbors! More than 250 signatures! Please keep sharing - facebook, twitter, email - whatever you're doing is working. Howard just called me and is doing back-flips over the moon, he's so happy! Thank you for all you're doing to get Safeway to do the right thing. Please keep it up!

Signed and shared on Facebook with more signings happening due to posting as we speak. Friends and colleagues on my Facebook are signing it to I don't even live in this neighborhood.
    I wrote this:
"A very well liked employee of our local grocery store saved up his vacation time as he does every year to travel out of country to see his extended family. His manager put him on the schedule during this time and when he did not show up, they terminated his employment. In the ruckus that followed other employees, bombarded with questions from shoppers were also suspended for answering the enquiries. Please read the petition and consider signing it. It will only take a few moments. Mr. Abrams is one of those people in our community who is not a big shot but adds immeasurably more by just being a hardworking, kind person."

    Thank you.

I've been shopping at the Twinbrook Safeway since it had mechanical cash registers (1978) and I've never seen a cashier with more enthusiasm than Howard. If I were the manager, I'm sure that I'd need a darn good reason to let him go or the Union would come down on me hard. With that said, can anybody tell me what "Questionable record keeping" means? To me, it doesn't sound good, and I'd rather wait than possibly sign something that I'll regret later.

"Questionable record keeping" is my euphemism for missing paperwork. Howard has taken the same vacation for years, and always files his request in plenty of time. There was a change in mgmt. shortly before he left and the new store mgr. told him she had no knowledge of his vacation time. Having paid for airfare, etc. and with family expecting him, Howard appealed to HR. They refused to allow him more than 2 weeks when he'd made arrangements for 4 weeks. While he was gone the mgr. scheduled him anyway, with the approval of HR, knowing he would not be available. When he returned he was informed of his termination. His grievance will be heard this Friday. I hope that helps you decide. Howard would love to have your support!

  23. The "HOWARD" petition has 496 signatures!
    Opened on February 17, 2015
    http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/reinstate-howard-abrams

To Steve Burnham, President of Safeway, Eastern Division:

    Dear Mr. Burnham,

It is hard for those of us in the Twinbrook/Veirs Mill area to comprehend that the Safeway store fired Howard Abrams. Howard is the only reason that many of us frequented the run-down Safeway store in our neighborhood. He always brought a smile to the customer’s faces while we stood in unreasonably long lines. We were entertained by his “come on down”, and “spin and win”, playful calls to customers. Many times there were multiple people in Howard’s check-out line, making it longer than all the other long lines. However, in addition to looking forward to personable service, we knew that Howard was the fastest checker in the store. We took our chances of getting out of the store faster in Howard’s line than standing in a shorter one.

Safeway would be making a serious mistake letting this man go. We respectfully request that you overturn the decision to fire Howard.

I go to this store for over 20 years, however, for the past few years I have other supermarkets that I like also, but I always go back to Safeway because of Howard. I will for sure stop shopping there if Howard does not return. Safeway will loose lots of costumers for sure. He makes every single one of us feel important and loved when we shopp at Safeway.

I support my local businesses that care about building relationships with me. Howard did this for our local Safeway. Without him, the store is just another grocery store with faceless management, and badly stocked shelves. If Howard doesn't return, I will go the extra mile or two to shop somewhere else.

He is one of the best people I have ever met. Safeway has had some not-so-friendly people working there in the past. He more than made up for them.

  24. I know we are all thinking about Howard, but let's not forget about Cindy, who is currently on suspension. The petition is now over 550 and is still gaining so let's see if we can get it to 1,000 by Tuesday evening. Yesterday (Thursday) I called the Gazette and talked to one of the editor's (Robert Rand ?) and they are aware of the story and are considering writing a story about Howard. BUT, they said that they want to wait to hear why he was fired and the outcome of his hearing; the reason being that they (the Gazette) don't want it to turn out to be a "he said, she said" kind of situation. I told them about the meeting on Tuesday night and that they should send a reporter to cover it just in case. I also told them I would call them with any new info. Also, for those who have been in contact with Howard, does anyone know his financial status or need. In other words, do we need to start a "Howard Fund" or take up a collection at the Tuesday meeting. I'd be more than happy to start it with $50 or $100. If you want to contact me direct, my e-mail is: retiredbum97@comcast.net

  25. Went grocery shopping this afternoon, but it wasn't at the Twinbrook Safeway. Until the Howard situation is resolved IN HIS FAVOR, I'll be doing all my grocery shopping at the Giant and at Target in the shopping center on Rockville Pike.

  26. I worked with Howard for 2 years in 2007 when he first started working at that twin brook safeway. I left and he still worked there well beyond any other employee that had previously build seniority. I also have had a personal relationship with this man as a older friend, or role model. I grew up around the guy and his face appeared in times of nead for me and my friends that new him. I am absolutely dissapointed, yet not surprised that this company has done something of the such. I have seem what big money companies have up there sleeve when it comes to not giving a damn about individuals. Anyways Howard if you read this, I came a few times with my daughter and she is doing awesome Walking and almost talking. 17 months already. Get justice Rocket Man!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Wanted to let everyone know 2 things. First, I attended the Twinbrook Civic Association (TCA) meeting on Tuesday evening and I was appalled by the small turnout. By my count, a total of 22 people were there: 5 TCA board members, 4 invited speakers from the City on various issues/topics and 13 people like myself, including Howard and his wife and 2 other members of my family. I realize that it was cold and that people have busy lives or that things come up at the last minute, but this was a cause that most of you were concerned enough about to comment on, but then take no further action to support someone whom you said you cared about. Second, I went shopping at the Twinbrook Safeway on Thursday afternoon and yes, I went through Howard's line. He is glad to be back and he hit me with "Come On Down" and "Spin and Win"; it sure was good to hear those familiar words and a friendly voice once again.

  29. There is a gathering today at 3PM at the Twinbrook Safeway to welcome Howard Abrams back to his post and acknowledge that Safeway did "the right thing". We'll go shopping and then share a big cake and some coffee. All are welcome.
