462 customers of the Twinbrook Safeway on Veirs Mill Road have signed the Reinstate Howard Abrams' Employment Status at Safeway petition online, nearing the goal of 500 signatures. You can still add your signature to the list.
Abrams was apparently terminated while on his annual vacation, and unjustly so in the view of his loyal customers and the grocery employees' union, which is contesting the move. Many customers have threatened to shop elsewhere if the "World's Best Cashier" isn't reinstated soon.
The petition is over 500! Safeway - are you listening?
ReplyDeleteBet he was paid too much per hour and that's why they let him go.
ReplyDeleteThere is a gathering today at 3PM at the Twinbrook Safeway to welcome Howard Abrams back to his post and acknowledge that Safeway did "the right thing". We'll go shopping and then share a big cake and some coffee. All are welcome. Here is a Huffington Post-ing written by a neighbor: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/natasha-tynes/the-story-of-howard-the-w_b_6770102.html
ReplyDeleteIt was a little bit chilly at the Twinbrook Safeway earlier this afternoon, but the 20 -25 people who showed up to celebrate Howard's return to his job at Safeway made it feel much warmer, along with the hot coffee and cake we all shared. Howard and his wife Simone thanked everyone for their concern and for coming out on a cold day. I'd like to again thank Ed Mattos for spear-heading this event and I would be remiss in not thanking Mike Smith who got the whole "Howard" thing started. This goes to show what a community can do when it rallies around such a worthy and deserving cause. As it said on the cake: "WELCOME BACK --HOWARD."
